Grmbl ... motherboard died on me yesterday ... (well..... I didnt get further then a burning led light on my motherboard (says nothing) ... it does go on for 1 second and then go out (the entire system) I tested it with a Zalman 400 Watt power supply and a Zalman 300 Watt power supply

On the 300 watts I get him to run ... Turned it off… and never got it on again. So I don’t really know if the motherboard is definitely exit…

But ... The beast is 5 a 6 years old (AMD 3200 + on a 754 Socket, 1 gb ddr ram, etc. ..)..... So maybe it's about time for an upgrade. ;)

Yesterday, I was thinking if I should buy a laptop (dock it to my keyboard, mouse and TFT or a desktop ... I think the desktop would be a better choice since I have half of it anyhow… (And because I only want to spend max 600 euro, because I prefer to save my money for my new motorcycle and traveling plans for next year).... So it would be really tight for a good laptop. Plus I just use it for gaming, movies and internet (downloading) and little things like photoshop ..... I never take it anywhere you go ... plus I have a laptop from work ... So a laptop didn’t seem a good option. Plus that I can always buy a laptop later.

I'm looking for CPUs and I need to go more in depth with it .... I saw on Alternate the following:

An Intel ® Core ™ 2 Duo E8400 for 149 euros (seems a bit outdated)

Quadcore beasts:

Intel ® Core ™ 2 Quad Q9550 for 189 Euro (775 on the socket ... so that seems a bit outdated again ....( I could be wrong))

AMD Phenom X4 Black Edition 955 for 169 euros (on Socket AM3)

Intel ® Core ™ i5-750 for 169 euros (on Socket 1156)

Intel ® Core ™ i7 920 to 249 euros (perhaps over the top? On Socket 1366)

In short: What I want to avoid is what happened to me with my old 754 socket processor. Shortly afterwards came the 939 and the 754 was phased out. Then I came with an issue of yes ... So if I want to get new parts for my pc ... I must not only upgrade my cpu, but my motherboard needs to be replaced ... additional I had also the problem that I had an AGP video card, etc. ...(going for PCI-e then)

I upgraded parts of my pc in the past.. So my hard drives are S-ATA and DVD burner is also on SaTA. Only a 200 GB IDE Harddisk and a dvd reader (which costs like nothing).

What do I need to upgrade is:

- Housing (Big tower .. but I now wants a midi-tower)
- Power supply (400 watt will not do anymore .. so go save with 600 watt?)
- Processor (with boxed cooler, if that doesn’t work I can take an external cooler).
- Video Card (PCI-E (I think an Nvidia 9800 GT or an ATI 4870 (moar research needed )).
- Memory (4GB DDR2 GeIL probably)
- Motherboard
- DVD lreader (unless there is an IDE connector on the motherboard)

The rest can I transfer from my old PC to my new PC:

- Burner
- Hard Drives
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Monitor
- Sound card (My 7 / 8 year old Audigy works find... .. unless I have no PCI slots ... but they're still on the mobo right?)

I'm thinking about what I forgot ... but this will be itp robably.

And remarks are welcome. :)

Tonight or Thursday I will go shopping then!.

I can't think for you, but really, if your pc lifecycle is 5+ years, why would you cut corners to upgrade and add some more junk to that box of dusty outdated pc parts you're never going to touch again.

Just keep this one intact and clean it, give it to your parents or a nephew/niece whatever, or maybe a local wellfare centre. Don't even save it because "it might be usefull someday as a server or mediacentre". Trust me, you are never going to touch it again. Make someone happy with it.

Your pc is probably the single most used item in your household, and if you are upgrading every 5+ years only, spend a couple 100 bucks more on it and get a proper new one. You aren't transfering parts of your old dishwasher or television to your new one, are you ?

Maybe you are right... I could ditch my soundcard and get a new Creative Infinity card ?

But the mouse, keyboard, speakers are only 6 months old.. why would I replace those?

The TFT monitor is a 24" from HP and is only 3 months old :) Kinda silly to replace that one. ;)

So I think you mean my DVD burner and soundcard and harddisks?
My Internal HD's are only 2 months old.... I think it is silly to replace those... I just format them and they are as good as new.

Could you give me specifics on what pieces of hardware you mean?

Im kinda starting all over... except for my harddisks then.... (and the externals).

But Im allways open for good solid feedback! :) I can stretch the budget btw.... I wont save by example 80 euro on a processor while I rather could get a MUCH better quadcore. But if the motherboard that goes with it is 200 euro more expensive it is kinda much :)

You don't really need a standalone soundcard unless you are serious about doing music production or something.

You could transfer your dvd burner, though I wonder who burns stuff these days. Last time I burned a dvd was 1,5 years ago I think. An extra hd is cheaper and makes it easier to do regular, safe backups.

You could transfer that dwarfish harddisk ( seriously, a 2 months old 200gb hd ?! ) , making your old pc worthless.

I enjoyed building and upgrading my pc as a student though, so I can still see the appeal of getting your hands dirty.

Nowadays I'd rather get something like a Dell Studio XPS or one of the new, relatively cheap iMacs.

I love music.. maybe I have to trust the default soundcard more.... I really dont burn much at all... I just store it on HD... watch it and then delete it. :) Backups arent done by disk.

That 200 GB hd isnt 2 months old... I meant my 2x 1 TB hd's ;) (WD Green something)... but Im concidering to buy a faster windows hd.

Well... I have to see which is cheaper.. the reason I dont look at a dell YET is that I have bad experiences with OEM machines.... the housing has a fixed behind, so you cant upgrade to a new motherboard without changing housing....... I need to get alot of crap I dont want or need... that costs money but I cant unselect it.

And Apple is just way to overpriced for what it offers + I aint a fan of the closed enviroment Apple offers. So I will stick with windows :)

BTW, REALLY appreciate you are thinking with me!

I have to agree with Feday here ... I used to favour upgrades a lot but these days it feels like bringing water to the sea. Sure, small scale upgrades like a new graphics card or extra memory are always good options but you need to have a good basis.

It may sound hars, but if you're PC is 5-6 years old I would sooner advice you to upgrade your toaster tbh.

Everybody has their own preferences but i must admit im pretty happy with the PC's dell supplies these days. For 600-800 euros you can buy a PC that would let you play wow easily for the next 4 expansions.

If you want your own PC you could also check http://www.graficall.nl/ . Im sure prices are cheaper elsewhere but i like it if I want to try and build something and see how it looks.

Ill give you a tip.

Buy this:

Mobo, CPU, Memory, Vid card, Buy a raptor disk (not as fast as SSD but more failsave for now). Thats it cheapass you dont need more to upgrade your PC. Dont know about your PSU but it prolly needs an upgrade as well. All these items i would pick of the best buy guide of tweakers. Send me the part numbers i put them in a quote for you and you will be done for 400/500 euro max.

Myca (http://awakenings-guild.net/forum/member.php?u=17): the only advantage of the 1336 is when running a cross-fire setup (which I wont do) and triple channel memory (1156 has dual channel) which doesnt give advantages ingame 10-31-09 12:16am
Myca (http://awakenings-guild.net/forum/member.php?u=17): thats why I feel i can better take the 1156 with a 860

10-31-09 12:16am
Myca (http://awakenings-guild.net/forum/member.php?u=17): as it is etimated that the 920 was a mistake from Intel they wont make again.

Myca (http://awakenings-guild.net/forum/member.php?u=17): Noe: Doesnt Misco deliver the I7 860 with the 1156 core motherboards? If I order a 1366 I am affraid I can only upgrade later on with 500 to 1000 euro CPU
